M20 Crankcases

Been asked by a customer to rebuild a civilian m21 from the frame number built 1957, the engine number dates from 1943 and seems to be a m20 lump as bore and stroke match the 500cc specs, one anomaly seems to be where the engine number is stamped the top third of the number is missing as if it may of been badly stamped or the crank cases have been machined down about 5mm, is this a known mod or just a bad day in the stamping department. Cylinder is currently still fitted and the whole bottom end seems yo be in really good nick, so wasn’t intending to strip any further, BSA”s are not my usual choice of restoration more a classic BMW restorer. Any Pointers greatfully recieved
