Dating a Norton 16H and it's Contract number please

Hi Guys,

Just purchased a 16H

V5 shows Frame number 596062 and Engine number W5023
I've looked in the British Forces Book but can find no reference to these numbers.
Could anyone shed any light please on the numbers or where to look?
I can see an engine number stamped to the right of the barrel but the number on the left side of the frame near the yoke seems a little messy being stamped on a radius and cannot make out fully what numbers they are.
I'm unable to find the contract number too.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Best regards,
Paul

W5023 is straightforward enough. It relates to contract C5109 and dates to early 1940.

The frame number that you're quoting is not correct. Norton reached just under 110000 before the war, and even afterwards with the Commando only just got above 335000...A six digit number as high as you're quoting cannot be based on a factory stamping.

I suspect that you need to take a brass wire brush to the front lefthand fuel tank lug.

Hallo Paul,

Have a look at wdnorton.nl. These is a guideline wieren to look form the frame nummer.

Hmmm

Working from a cell phone has strange effects.

I was intending to say there are guidelines where to look for the frame number on the wdnorton.nl website, frame and engine number page.

Cheers,

Re: Dating a Norton 16H and it's Contract number please

Thank you guys,

Will give it a scrub-up and see what turns up when I have a little more time!
Will also view Norton's site.

It seems it has sidecar pulling lugs etc too.
Lug under tank, peg side of engine and hole boss through frame just under seat.

Best regards,
Paul

They all have the sidecar lugs.

Re: Dating a Norton 16H and it's Contract number please

Hi Guys,

Photographing the frame number with my camera and then expanding it, the number looks to be 36082
it's not the best stamping to be honest.
