Dating a Norton 16H and it's Contract number please
Hi Guys,
Just purchased a 16H
V5 shows Frame number 596062 and Engine number W5023
I've looked in the British Forces Book but can find no reference to these numbers.
Could anyone shed any light please on the numbers or where to look?
I can see an engine number stamped to the right of the barrel but the number on the left side of the frame near the yoke seems a little messy being stamped on a radius and cannot make out fully what numbers they are.
I'm unable to find the contract number too.
Re: Dating a Norton 16H and it's Contract number please
W5023 is straightforward enough. It relates to contract C5109 and dates to early 1940.
The frame number that you're quoting is not correct. Norton reached just under 110000 before the war, and even afterwards with the Commando only just got above 335000...A six digit number as high as you're quoting cannot be based on a factory stamping.
I suspect that you need to take a brass wire brush to the front lefthand fuel tank lug.
