Opinions Needed Please

A mate of mine brought his Flea to mine because it had no spark , he has paid someone £1000 !!! who has professed to have rebuilt the engine ? and the ignition coil apparently re-wound ,and condenser replaced with a new one !

Photo's attached of the engine rebuild ! maybe 2 threads on the spark plug side (swapped it with the de-compressor as the thread reached the bottom) , oversized bolt on the cylinder base , barrel pitted also the magneto has scored the casings ,and a homemade head gasket made out of 3mm aluminium .

Its been ridden for approx 3 hours in total since rebuild last year, before it broke down and refused to start again .

Before I opened it up , I set the timing etc but still no spark nothing at all .

Just wondered what others thought of the engine rebuild thats been carried out

Re: Opinions Needed Please

To me it looks like a clear case of doing the minimum to get it running. Which is OK if it was just one mate helping another. But to charge for work and materials that has obviously not been carried out is criminal and deserves legal action as long as there is a paper trail of proof. Maybe just confront the culprit first!! Re: Opinions Needed Please

What a lash up...Whoever built that wants his a**e kicking...It's not up to even a minimum acceptable standard...

I'd go back and demand some redress...and I wouldn't be shy about revealing the guilty party either, before he rips someone else off...Ian

Re: Opinions Needed Please

I mentioned going back to the place who carried out the "work" after he told me it wasn't going and seeing some of the external handy work .I thought to check the timing first but on closer inspection! As you say Ron ,give them the opportunity to put it right if not then take it further , providing he has the paperwork .

I'm curious as to why they have put a 3mm homemade head gasket on ?

Re: Opinions Needed Please

My exact sentiments Ian , the lad isn't remotely mechanically minded so he's certainly had his eyes taken out with this . He's in the States at the moment ,when he gets back I'll just tell him to take it back to where it was "done" or should that be too where HE was done .

I'll have to ask him who the culprit is .

Re: Opinions Needed Please

A few years ago I (re)rebuilt a B33 engine for a chap who had it 'restored' by a dealer local to me...It was a crap job rather like your friends engine...

I suggested he take it back but he pointed out that if the bloke didn't rebuild it correctly when he was being paid he didn't think he would do it right when he wasn't being paid the second time...

There's some logic in that I guess..

He was happier to pay me again for the work to be redone properly..

I think a lot of these people get away with it because their customers don't relish the hassle and confrontation involved in redress...Ian

Re: Opinions Needed Please

With something like an engine rebuild, I Would not take it back to the person who did a crap job. A) anyone who does this sort of a job is not someone you want near your engine; B) there is a danger you would either never see the engine again or it would be worse due to malicous actions. Ask for a full refund or if refused and this was a commercial undertaking, then presumably you do have recourse under consumer law? If none of these apply, then chalking it down to experience may be best.

Re: Opinions Needed Please

That's true ,if he cant do it right the first time , probably will be no better the second time around .The person responsible will no doubt again just do enough to get it running.

Unfortunately my mate falls into that category of the non confrontational type so this "ripoff merchant" will probably get away with it .

Another anomaly while the person (going to have to get his name )had the bike , the lighting coil wires were not re installed and they put a battery under the seat!

Re: Opinions Needed Please

Unfortunately it looks as if this is going to be put down to experience, I honestly think he will be wasting his time .

It very much looks like finding someone willing, is conversant with these an also has access to parts to sort this one out properly.
