Having looked for a rear stand for my project 48 M21 with no luck I have decided to make my own. I know some of you on this forum have made their own and I am looking for advice.I have a original to copy so have all the measurements. If the Injuns can make them I know I can and looking at whats on offer from Asia dont look to good. Also am going to shorten the legs as per Hans idea for ease of use..Dave
In Israel, the WM20 was a very common daily vehicle during the 50's and
To some extent the 60's, usually with a sidecar, till cars became cheaper and more common,
So there was an industry around it, of making and attaching sidecars,
Manufacturing the metal clutch disks,
Fitting an oil retainer to the old gearbox, like the newer model has,
Fitting a closed one piece ball bearing to the clutch instead of the rollers,
"DYNAMO FIBER DRIVE GEAR" made out of a plastic cast and so on.
One of the common practices was to fit a locally made side stand, on the left-hand side,
Which was a kickstand. the rear stand was not used, usually,
And the the long side stand was usually removed.
It looked somewhat like the Indian universal stand, (eBay)
But was made out of a tube with a small plate at the bottom end, rather than a metal cast.
The attachment system was made out of 2 halves of a tube, but with margins/shoulders, with 4 holes (2 on each side) for fixing screws.
One half was welded to the top of the stand, and the other, free half, was screwed to it
From the other side of the frame.
I will try to take a photo if I can find one.
It is very east DYI, if you have some tools and a welder.
The down side was that it often did not have a good grip to the frame
And could rotate, with time, if was not fasten from time to time.
What many riders do in order to prevent it, was to weld the top base to the chassis...)-:
Hi Noam BSA actually made a side stand like the one in your photos, they fitted them to plunger B31 C11 etc. I actually have one which I have retro fitted to my 48 M21 as Jimmy says you dont want to haul the bike onto rear stand every stop you make.I want to make my own rear stand which I will use during servicing and parking up for longer periods.I have now sourced some 28mm solid bar which I will machine up to make the top slugs for stand, the tubing part will be easy to make and will make a jig using the original BSA stand I have but as said will make legs shorter....Dave
I have to open and close a five bar gate every time I come and go on a bike. So I fitted one of those side stands to the front rail of my M20/Indian. I put some mig weld tacks at the back to avoid it swivelling. Ron
