Military Motorcycle Paintwork

I'm wanting to get the main bodywork parts of my RAF WD B40 repainted in RAF Blue/Grey gloss (tank, mudguards, headlight shell etc. etc.) however, I'm having trouble finding someone to do the job up here in West Yorkshire. Some of the firms advertising in the Classic Bike mags are charging eye-watering amounts for just painting tanks etc. Can anyone help or suggest somewhere please?

Re: Military Motorcycle Paintwork

Try to find a paintshop that doesn't specialise in bikes...I've found smaller garages that do spray repairs on cars to be more cost effective...

I do most of my own paintwork these days, but I am paying a small fortune to have an absolutely top quality paint job done on my 'TT' Bonneville...

I don't have the 'proper' facilities but have bought a good quality spray gun (DeVilbiss) and that makes all the difference...Ian

Re: Military Motorcycle Paintwork

I guess most professional paint shops will want £40-£60 per hour and it doesn't take long to rattle up £600- £800 for a tank and a pair of dented and rusty guards that have a series of extra holes that need welding up, and that's before you get into two tone and pin striping etc. It's a fact that you can spend more on a professional restoration than a vehicles ever worth.

I do all my own military paintwork and even straight forward single colour gloss, but I draw the line at anything arty. Fortunately we have Larry in the New Forest who works at the lower hourly rate, but it still cost me best part of a grand to get the tank, guards and wheel rim centres painted on this Ron

Re: Military Motorcycle Paintwork

Sadly about a week after my previous post here, a close friend of Larry's broke into his flat to find him dead on his sofa. Those of us who knew him are very shocked and we await the coroners report......I guess there will be a bikers funeral in the near future Ron
