Oil pipe to the rear chain?

Hello just a quick one do you need to use the pipe to oil the chain(from the left hand side of engine) or can you block it up? it put lots of oil on the chain!! thanks Keith.

Re: Oil pipe to the rear chain?

Hi Keith

You can't block it up because its your engine breather.

Its up to you if you point it at your chain, but if you do it shouldn't supply enough oil to keep your chain properly lubricated anyway, if that much is coming out you probably have a problem?

Re: Oil pipe to the rear chain?

The breather pipe should be directed at the road under the bike and definitely not blocked off for the reason noted by Rob...

If your bike has been standing for a while it may have dropped some oil into the sump, in which case more may come out of the breather pipe until the crank case is cleared..

If you are getting a lot of oil from the pipe all the time then there could be a scavenging problem with the pump or, more likely, the bore/piston/rings and/or the valves and valve seats are worn leading to excessive crank case pressure...

Also check that the crank case breather valve is functioning correctly...A fault here can also cause excess pressure in the cases.......Ian

Re: Oil pipe to the rear chain?

Thanks Rob and Ian will move pipe just at the end of the pipe do I need to make the hole a bit smaller or just as it is? just build the bike run ok
(for now) once again thanks all for help!!! regards Keith.

Keith

Not sure what you mean about making the hole smaller?

Where the breather pipe fits on to the engine is the breather assembly, inside there is a flap valve which needs to work correctly to vent excess pressure (not oil) from the crank case.

So you need to work out why lots of oil is coming out of the breather pipe.

As Ian says it could be that the engine has wet sumped, or it could be that your oil pump isn't working properly or maybe the return pipe to the tank or an oil way in the engine is blocked.

Either way running the bike without curing the problem could cause some damage.

Re: Oil pipe to the rear chain?

If you have just rebuilt the engine and it has had a rebore/piston wait a while...
I have found that some rebuilt engines blow out an excess of oil for 250-300 miles or until he rings are fully bedded in...Ian
