Is there any info about this photo? They are busy with a theodolite; the tripod looks very much a Wild one, but although I had a lot to do with surveying in my career I don't recognize the instrument....

The original picture sold on ebay yesterday, the seller seemed to think it was taken in Cornwall.

I don't recognise the instrument either, but I assume it's a theodolite of some sort, Royal Engineers perhaps?

Re: Forum picture

Could be a Tavistock theodolite....

Re: Forum picture

I think these instruments were used in the Royal Artillery. To measure the land. I was in the Dutch artillery in 1980/1981 and these instruments were used by the Artillery Land Measure groups.

There was a radar station built at St Keverne in 1940-41 with anti-aircraft protection.

The siting of guns and calculations for their use would have required plenty of artillery surveying.

Quite a nice job to be doing in the summer of 1941 !
