What steel to use for making axel

Hi All.
Am fitting a 7 inch front brake to my M20.
I need to make a new axel, what is the best steel to use for this.
Have a heap of photos of up grades I have done to the bike but unable to post them on this site , what is the trick to do it.
Cheers with Beers.

Go to a car breakers and get an old car half shaft...Perfect for the job...Ian

Re: What steel to use for making axel

Try the following - easily machined and tough, otherwise as Ian says find a drive shaft, though you may find it tough to machine.

EN16 Bright Round
Bar
:
EN16
Black
round
bar

EN16 also known as 605M36 is a low alloy, high tensile steel with good mechanical properties. This grade is normally supplied as EN16T, but can also be supplied in other conditions: EN16R and EN16S. High Peak Steels can also supply EN16 as black bar.

EN16T/605M36 has a tensile range of 850 to 1000 N/mm², it has a good resistance to shock and is also very ductile making it ideal for bolts, nuts, gears and axles. It is supplied in a readily machinable condition

Re: What steel to use for making axel

Hi Drew and Others
I've used 4140 HT steel which is readily available in NZ in small quantities and threads/turns easily.
Cheers All

Re: What steel to use for making axel

War axels were turned up from free machining sulphur steel.
Usually with a touch of either boron or tellurium
