Help to ID bike in old photo please

Hello all,

This old photo was taken in Iceland. Can anyone help me in
identifying the bike in the photo?
Regards
Hinrik

Re: Help to ID bike in old photo please

Hi Hinrik,

Looks like a late '30 Matchless with coil ignition, but not sure

Cheers, Michiel

Re: Help to ID bike in old photo please

Not sure its a Matchless but it could well be Coventry Eagle, who built bikes using quite a lot of last years Matchless parts; OEC did similar, the tank does not look Matchless, but very much Coventry Eagle so thats what I'd plump for.

Would also throw OK Supreme into that hat as well.

Re: Help to ID bike in old photo please

Yes Ken, think you are correct about OK Supreme:

Tank and oiltank look the same, this one is fitted with a JAP, on the old photo it looks like the Matchless powerunit.

Re: Help to ID bike in old photo please

Yes that distinctive long tank and the rake of the forks match, plus I'd say that with that gearbox, not one of Burmans best, and coilignition its a 250cc.

Matchless supplied engines, and often frame parts to several other marques, mostly obselete or nearing the end of the range stuff.

They'd supply timing cases at odd angles, and with appropriate motifs cast into them, also the rocker cover plate would have the logo or just fins cast in.

Re: Help to ID bike in old photo please

My guess would also be a Matchless engine (see the two push rod tubes) and old model gearbox.

Thank you all for helping with this.

Hinrik
