New Frame with Side Car Lugs

Good evening all,

I have just won a bid for an M20 (WD) Frame.

The frame is from Greece and has frame number : WM20-73641 which is from contract C13290 placed 24/01/42 for 10.000 machines.

It has been brought to my attention that the frame in fact has side car lugs. (Which I believe may be a post war alteration) only small contracts for the RAF ect had instructions for lugs to be fitted?

I've been informed that there are M20 frames surfacing from India and North Africa which also have lugs attached to the frame.

I'm not sure weather to remove the lugs (as they wer'nt on the frame originally??) or to look for a Swallow Universal chassis and depict an RAF outfit ?

Please see below a picture of my new frame.

I welcome any of your comments 😀

Kind regards,

Mark

Re: New Frame with Side Car Lugs

Hi Mark,

I've got a postwar frame and a KM20 frame with sidecar lugs, and I think they look different than this. Something to me doesn't look right about the way the lug is attached to the front down tube.

Re: New Frame with Side Car Lugs

Hello Mark,

Did you notice the thick collar on the front downtube?
The area under the steering head brazing is a bit delicate, and often cracks / shears there.
It look like someone put a collar over it and welded to mend it.
There is probably also another tube “implanted” inside.
This is my opinion, at least.
I may be wrong...

BTW,
You can post all of your photos at the same time, just to copy and paste the HTML codes
One under the other, and it would all show. (you can enter comments between the lines)

Best regards and good luck,
Noam.

Personally I would cut and grind those side-car lugs off, and get the front down tube repaired nicely with an internal hollow spigot. Ron

Re: New Frame with Side Car Lugs

Hi all,

Thank you very much for all your good comments and observations so far .

It will all become much clearer once the frame arrives in my arms .... But yes I can defiantly see the points raised . I'm going to remove the side car lugs and have the frame repaired and hopefully will make a nice frame.

Is frame repair a specialist job or can any good local welder turn his hand to it ?

I purchased the frame for £170 ... And I'm hoping that the cost for repairs/grinding work will still work out cheaper than the cost of other frames I've seen for sale 🙏🏻

I will post more pictures of the frame (post repair works 👍🏻)

Does anyone recommend a repairer to undertake such a task?

Kind regards,

Mark

Hi Ron,

Do you know if it's possible for a good welder to turn the frame back to something similar to its original shape, or will I have to get used to that bulbous front tube repair currently on the frame ?

If it is possible to remedy, do you recommend any one ?

Kind regards,

Mark

Re: New Frame with Side Car Lugs

Well I'll be getting a frame for my experimental Royal Enfield project seriously cut and modified by my local engineer (Bournemouth) who has been doing stuff like this for me for years. Fortunately he shares the same building with fabricators who have also made me stuff for years and they work hand in hand so to speak.

Without seeing your frame up close, I'm guessing that the first obstacle, is removing that old bit of tube. Depends how it's fixed?
