I am trying to rebuild what I think is a 1937 M20 civilian bike. Frame number HM19 3372. 66-A088 9 casting number
I have had the wheels rebuilt but the builder could not find out the offset for them. Do I have to wait until the bike is back together to set the wheels correctly. appreciate any advise as to identification of bike and offset on wheels. thanks
The only time I've had to be concerned about offset on wheels was when building a diesel bike from scratch. There I set the wheels with tyres vertically at the correct wheelbase between two stout straight pieces of timber.Clamped it all together on my m/c bench which is straight and level and then moved the rest of the bike about on axle stands and bits of wood, it work very well. If you wanted to use this method I would suggest that the rims unlaced with tyres on are clamped vertical and straight and jiggle the bike about until it's in correct alignment then measure the resultant offset to which your wheels are then built. Simple!
