Handlebar Muffs

The thread on Handlebar Mirrors got me thinking.

How did riders keep their hands warm on wet and wintry days?

Any pictures of cunningly fashioned handlebar muffs?

Re: Handlebar Muffs

I have used them for many years.

I meant during the war.

Re: Handlebar Muffs

Pat, I think they were just as hard as nails. I can think of no particular images and have searched those I have on file including the winters of 1944 in Italy and 1944-45 in NW Europe and can see no machines adapted for hand protection

Some early BEF photos show sheepkin mitts and knitted woollen gloves but in general, nothing other than standard MT gloves.

I've been out for three quarters of an hour this afternoon and came back with white finger tips and knees so cold that I felt compelled to authorise a grog ration !
