My dynamo has become a little temperamental in that it wasn't putting out a charge. I cleaned the armature with electrical cleaner which seemed to do the trick, but it stopped charging again.
The brushes have plenty of life in them and the springs seem ok.
However, where the brushes rub on the armature there is some blackening (not much) which I would like to remove.
Would it do any harm using a little wet and dry sand paper to remove this?
do not use wet or dry! the metal particles can short out armature, use petrol or parafin etc to remove blackening or as a last resort ultra fine glasspaper.
Instead of petrol which can soften some insulation, use brake cleaner.
In aerosol, great to squirt around brush gear - or buy 5l and use it for damn near everything! Evaporates/drys quick as well.
