Crinkle hub brake question

I'm putting the rear wheel back in my '58 M21 but one of the parts has got me scratching my head.

67-6081 is described as a brake lever steady strap but I can't see what function it performs as, according to the parts book, one end passes through the wheel spindle and the other end over the brake cam bush on the brake plate. Any ideas?

Gary.

Re: Crinkle hub brake question

I don't know anything about post war BSA's. But my WD Velo's have the same thing. It's simply to help stop the flexing at the brake arm pivot to eliminate the equivalent of a 'spongy' brake pedal. Ron

Re: Crinkle hub brake question

It's a brace to stop the brake plate bending under load.

Re: Crinkle hub brake question

Thanks guys, not sure why they didn't simply beef up the brake plate but question answered - on with the rebuild!
