BSA Busy

Here's a couple of projects coming to a conclusion in the workshop...

First a rebuild of the original engine for my 1951 B33, all ready to go together over the next few days...

Next a Gold Star 'lookalike' engine..wide flange B33 crankcases, needle roller pressed up crank, scrambler cams and a DBD top end (all new castings)...It should make a nice road engine...Ian

Re: BSA Busy

There is not many things that can beat the sight of clean healthy engine parts on a work bench ready to be assembled!

Enjoy!

Re: BSA Busy

I agree...That's the enjoyable part of the job after all the 'dirty' work is done...

Here's some more prepared parts from another project..Ian

Re: BSA Busy

Hi Ian, nice to see what you are up to. I seem to have been more Ariel busy this year. I've ended up building six Square Fours this year, along with a few singles.

We are on somewhat different levels you and I Mick...

Re: BSA Busy

very nice clean restore .. it looks better then it left the BSA factory perhaps :)
it require lot of handwork & £££ though to clean finish like this ..

Some nice looking stuff in your laboratory as usual Ian! Obviously post war. Is that hole in the timing cover for a rev counter or sumfink?

Did you add the lightening piercings? It reminds me of the B30 engine. Ron

Re: BSA Busy

Hi Ron..The hole in the cover is for an additional breather..It just happens that I did it at the same time as some other covers for engines which did have to have rev counters fitted...

Once set up it was easier to do them all the same...

The timing outrigger plate is a one off to my own specs...All the holes are hand cut and filed to the finished shape..Quite time consuming as you would imagine..

The gears are just machine down and drilled for lightness to improve the responsiveness of the engine..

All the parts in that photo are for the sprinter...Ian

Re: BSA Busy

Ah the sprinter! I'll look forward to seeing it completed.

Lex that is an oil flinger, which sits between the drive side flywheel and main bearing. Ron

Re: BSA Busy

Ok, thanks Ron, must have been 25 years since I had an M20 that far apart!!

Cheers,

Re: BSA Busy

That goes against the flywheel cheek on the drive side, behind the inner main bearing..It's an oil flinger plate...

I don't think it is particularly effective in that role...

Quite often when the engines are raced (Gold Stars, B33s etc.) they get left out and just replaced with a washer of the same thickness...

It doesn't have a detrimental effect....

I have some NOS ones and tend to fit them anyway rather than going to the trouble of making the washers!...Ian

We cannot wait to come and see you on the sprinter. Even Glenda has said she will camp out for that one

Re: BSA Busy

Ian, what is the finish on all the parts ? Looks like bead-blasting...

Re: BSA Busy

It's mainly bead blasting with either aluminium oxide grit or A.O. grit followed by a glass bead to finish...

The sump plate is powder coated silver....

I like the inside to be as clean as the outside when I put an engine together...Ian
