Cut off fuel tank with very small filler hole+cap????

Good evening,

I'm asking this question on behalf of a friend.

He is currently a custodian of an M20 fuel tank with cut off (for Volkes filter) however ..... The fuel cap and filler hole are the size of the M20 Oil tank

Any ideas why this is ????

Any feed back is much appreciated!

It could be an AA one, is the filler hinged at the side? Maybe it is one that someone made up to look like a military one as the AA ones didn't have the cutaway
