I took a chance on this item when I saw it on Ebay because (1) I'm sure I've seen it before somewhere, (2) the sellers description was intriguing and (3) it was cheap.
The seller said "vintage motorcycle pannier part came with a set of wd khaki pannier frames".
It measures 7 inches (178mm) across, the 4 slots are 1 inch and I presume could be used for a webbing strap?
My first thought was perhaps something to do with an airfilter, but it could just as easily be a bit of a wireless set, generator set or 3 ton truck.
It seems a bit thin gauge steel to be a bash plate, but you are right its that sort of size and shape, but it doesn't match any bash plate that I can find.
I believe that it was the service green replacement engine cover fitted to the Suffolk Colts used by Reconnaissance Regiments when on Royal Parks duty.
I have just had a reply from the British Lawnmower Museum, and they don't recognize it.

There is no end to how much I love the fact that there actually IS a British Lawnmower Museum! Who would go there I can't help to wonder (and probably step on someones toes as is sort of a habit of mine when making jokes about things I don't understand -Sorry! ).
Nothing odd about a Lawn Mower museum.... is there?
What I love about the interwebby thing is the amount of sites run by collectors of odditiesthere is one about old camp stoves, and I've just discovered a couple of sites about old hurricane lamps.....nice to know I'm not the only one
