Loud Engine, does this sound correct?

It sounds like there are a few marbles bouncing around in my engine. Is it me or does it sound OK to you?

Thank you for all the help this last week,

Re: Loud Engine, does this sound correct?

Something doesn't sound quite right..I would start initially by checking the tappet clearances and the setting of the ex.valve lifter...

Although the manual states .010" (inlet) and .012" (exhaust) as the tappet clearances I always run mine with a 'slack' .008" on the exhaust and a 'snug' .008" on the inlet...

That alone will quieten things down a bit..

FOLLOW the correct procedure for positioning the engine before adjusting the tappet clearances..

Also refer to the manual for setting the exhaust valve lifter and be prepared for a fiddly job...

Don't worry too much about the actual gap between the lifter spindle and the underside of the tappet head..Just make sure that when you set the exhaust tappet as you would for adjusting the tappets there is no contact between the peg on the lifter spindle and the tappet head...Ian

Re: Loud Engine, does this sound correct?

Tell u a story about Cuz Andy;
Rebored his Ariel before last weeks IOM (in this case it needed it!), found a damaged small-end bush as well.

Started his 'new' motor - thought piston was hitting head, so off with the head - no witness marks, phoned me ....... no idea.
On run over to my house, it was so bad he went back to phone me - before he did, had a fiddle ......

It was the valve-lifter ....... boy what a noise, fooled an old biker like Andy!
Over the phone, it sounded just like this BSA ....

Said bike is now in bits again after blowing the B.E. @ + 80 in IOM ............
ho hum.
