Good afternoon all.

I am currently fitting an exhaust lifter to my M20. (The previous owner had removed it) I now have the brass lever for the handle bars, and the actual lifter that fits in the side of the tappet box. I now need to purchase a cable.

I carefully removed the cork plug in the side of the tappet housing and screwed the exhaust lifter into position.

I then turned the engine over to confirm I had correct clearance on the exhaust tappet washer and the lifter tip.

I have noticed that my exhaust lifter tip (that makes contact with the exhaust tappet washer) is worn. It's worn almost half way across.

However ... When I turn the lifter it still raises the exhaust tappet proudly 👍

Question:

1. Can I get away with this or is it best to purchase a new one?

2. Where can I purchase a cable ?

3. I can't find any pics of the correct set up at the tappet end on either manuals or Internet . I'm having difficulty imagining how the cable attaches to the valve lifter? And which direction the lever arm needs to be set , and how the cable can raise the arm if it's not anchored to the chassis ?

Firstly Mark you need the special engine plate stud that holds the cable adjuster. This is angled slightly at the cable adjuster and must be fitted the correct way up to allow the adjuster to miss the crank case. (Russells or Drags I guess)
I doubt your 'tip' has worn! They are often ground down to give clearance, especially when the valve seat has become pocketed from grinding the valve in over the years.

You can buy a cable from Draganfly, Russells or C&D autos but they are usually all made by JJ Cables on 01926 651470. Ron
