I had not noticed this before, but if you look carefully at the nice photo of the M20 in full flight, you will see that the enamel mug is fitted with aperture facing forward. Now on Matchlesses, the mug is fitted with aperture to the rear, thus providing the excellent streamlining that this marque is renowned for. Alas, I understand that M20 owners who do not wish to court ridicule and scorn are stuck with adopting the factory specification for enamel mug figment and so must continue to view with envy, the rapid progress of its speedier rival. Now I understand that someone has developed a removable carbon fibre streamlined nosecone that can be fitted over the mouth of the M20 mug that results in a 20% increase in top speed, enabling it to keep up with a Matchless on downhill gradients with the wind behind and the front wheel removed from the Matchless.

Extensive testing at the BSA test track revealed the M20 would achieve 58mph reliably and in perpetuity, irrespective of load, so mug positioning was not a factor...
Matchless fitted the mug on the left on early war models, facing rearwards, but following normal AMC practice it was relocated to five other positions, enamelled in four different colours and was used for tea, coffee and water at various times during hostilities...
After a 1944 eratum note attached to a supplement of the last reprint of the workshop manual (the 124th. between 1939 and that date) most riders wore the mug on top of their helmet..
Despite this they still managed to maintain a false sense of superiority over riders of the products of the largest and most successful UK manufacturer, based mainly on the use of a new fork design copied from the enemy...... ..Ian

ps, to fit the mug with the open side up front might loose you 20mph on an M20, but the advantage is that you will have something to eat after the ride!!

I can remember years ago in Normandy riding a bike around with a tin mug attached to the panniers and after a couple of days riding was offered an aperetif at a friendly French town.........I opted to use said tin mug, afterwards wishing I hadn't............it contained an oily residue no doubt from the bike's carb or exhaust, that added a rather strange flavour to said aperetif......
Thereafter said mug remained firmly in the panniers..........
