I am enjoying riding my newly restored 1933 R33-4 (detuned Blue Star) bit I am missing not having a side stand when I stop for a break.
Not being as nimble these days I am finding it difficult getting to the rear of the bike to put it on the rear stand, especially on sloping or soft ground. The rear stand also needs a bit of wood under it on soft ground to stop the whole lot toppling over.
It has occurred to me that BSA solved this problem with the WD 'Field Stand' and this should be an easy retro fit if the R33 and M20 back stay tubes are the same size. Mine measure 3/4"
I would appreciate any thoughts and advice on where to find a good 'repo' field stand.

But maybe your bike is better suited or has provision for a short 'Jiffy' stand.

Although the field stand is well suited for it's purpose of propping the bike up on soft ground, it is almost a must to leave the bike in gear on a hard service to stop it rolling off the stand, which means it's very risky to leave the bike ticking over whilst you open a gate.......Don't ask me how I know Ron

A bolt-on to lower frame rail, folding stand, may be an option ?

Be careful if you do, a lot of these side stands that clamp on have a nasty habit of snapping. I was at a show once and an A10 that looked very nice parked up on the hard standing and then he took off his helmet and walked away about 5 minutes later the bike fell over and put a lovely dent in his chrome tank, I picked it up thinking it had fallen off its stand but the tab that the stand bolted to had broken clean off. Indeed I sold one to a customer of mine and his too snapped in exactly the same place, fortunately only his pride was hurt.

I'm thinking I will try the 'field stand' to see if I can live with that (remembering to leave the bike in gear). I have just spent the kids inheritance on a full professional restoration for the bike and it looks a million bucks at the moment so I don't really want to drill/pin or weld the lower frame rails if I can avoid it. I figure the field stand would be a bolt on/ bolt off option to try.

I notice reference to 'early short' or 'regular long' field stands. Does anyone have the measurement for these? I assume repro items would be the long version.

Also if anyone could verify the diameter of the M20 back stay tube where the field stand bolts on that would be great. The back stay tubes on my R33 are 3/4"

Yes they are the same size the tubing that is, well my Wm20 and my 35 R17 are same size.

Unfortunately, the field stand clamp will mess up the paint on your frame as well..and you have to consider where you are going to put the field stand clip and its mounting plate...

On an M20 it is fitted to the lower stud that holds the rear mudguard stays to the frame..

However, that stud is lengthened to accommodate the mounting plate which is more or less 1/4" thick.....

If you are buying a pattern field stand enquire about the tube diameter of the main leg...many pattern stands use a tube larger than the original making engagement and disengagement with a genuine field stand clip nearly impossible...Ian

Blue Stars were fitted with a porp stand as an option. I know these are hard to find but there is a Czech guy making excellent replicas including the cast in part number. Het sells them on Ebay but can also be contacted directly. The attachment is below the left hand chain stay at the attachment point for the rear brake anchor strap.

I will follow up on the replica Blue Star prop stands mentioned by Leon. I just hope it will work with my bike as it is fitted with low level exhaust pipes.

Given the Dragonfly website says "made to order" would anybody know if these are Indian imports or are they manufactured in the UK. I'm keen to get a stand but trying to find an original is proving rather hopeless.
