Does anyone know the recomended main jet and needle jet size for the m23 engine?
I've been reading my prewar BSA manual and looks like the m23 doesn't use a head gasket. It talks about using a jointing coumpound. Is this correct? If so what would be a good product to use?
So I found a carb setting spreadsheet on draganfly. The m23 came with an amal 89. I have an amal 276 that came with the bike currently. Looks like the throat on the 89 is an 1/8 bigger. Am I better off hunting down the correct carb or will the 276 suffice?
The bike will run on a 276 IF it is correctly set up...There will be a slight reduction in top speed and possibly speeds through the gears due to the smaller throat size...
However, if you are not familiar with setting up Amal carbs and don't want to learn now (with the attendant risks) I would recommend the correct carb set up to the correct specification is the best place to start...Ian
Cut away is not easy to reverse. Get the main jet right first, then the needle position, then the idle. With a smaller carb, a 200 needle may be too rich. Start with a 160 or 170. Find a long slight uphill and ride at 3/4 throttle. Then open the throttle. If you increase speed you are fine. If not, move to the next size main jet.
