Making most of the lovely weather today here in the South West of England, I pulled my M20 out the garage and tried to fire her up! But there was no pressure and the kick start just clicked very limply downwards (it was very easy to push down indeed)

Since purchasing my M20 last week I have not yet been able to get her to shift up into 1st gear


So my immediate action drill was to visit the 'Technical section' on the website.

I learnt that my gear lever rod/arm should be vertical when the clutch is fully depressed.

My gear lever arm/rod was far from vertical with the clutch depressed (it was almost touching the gearbox casing with clutch depressed) so I adusted it accordingly.

I suspected that my adjustment may of been a factor for the kick start not having any pressure tonight , so re adusted the gear lever arm/rod until I was able to get pressure in the engine and fire her up !



However I still can't select first gear the gear lever arm/rod is now just off from being vertical ! ... But thats the only way I can get pressure in the kick start ?

Does any one know any Indian tricks to solve this ?

Hi Mark,
There can be a host of issues concerning gear selection in these gearboxes, the clutch just being one of them.

Since you have backed off the clutch arm to it's correct position you now might not be getting enough separation between the clutch plates, this could be caused by the push rod being worn or the incorrect length.

Can you select gears when the engine is stationary and rocking the bike back and forward? If not then a look into the gearbox is most likely needed.

Just a thought, since your new to this bike, the gear selection pattern is one up and three down.

Thanks for your post, I will investigate further,

With the engine off, I can press the clutch and get her into gear,, So if I kick start her whilst sat on her rear stand , the rear wheel will spin.

Just with the engine running she won't engage into first gear

It sounds like a clutch problem.
remove the primary chain case outer cover and see if the clutch pressure plate lifts squarely when the clutch lever is pulled in. An uneven lift can cause the clutch to drag making gear selection difficult.
