Starting issue

HI All

I have a starting issue with e Triumph 3HW
Got a nice spark from the plug, Timing is set 3/8 BTDC full advance
Ran for about 2 min today and will not restart just spits fuel back out the carb,
Air/mix screw is about 1 turn out also

Regards

Carl

Re: Starting issue

I would think it unlikely that something has happened to the valve timing. I would suspect the ignition timing to have slipped, especially if it has only just been timed. Good starting point.

Re: Starting issue

Well check the ignition timing by all means. But I don't really see how it can slip.... unless the pinion nut is not nipped up properly. Ron

Re: Starting issue

It happened to me on my B33 had timed it, thought I had tightened up the pinion nut but after running for awhile it wouldn't restart. It was I thought a good starting point and easy to check.

Re: Starting issue

Definitely worth checking and one of the easier ones to do on a Triumph. At least there is an access plug in the timing cover and a self extracting pinion. Ron

Re: Starting issue

Try to isolate the problem;

Squirt/dribble a bit of petrol down the s/plug hole - if it then starts its a fuel problem - probably low speed circuit blocked or the float is stuck.

If still same, recheck ignition timing - making sure you time it with the advance/retard lever in 'right' position (slack or tight wire advance).

Many mags as they age, lose their really good low speed/starting spark - over the full advance/retard range.
In other words, they spark well at full advance/retard, but when the advance/retard lever is adjusted, the spark become less intense.
I presume you are trying to start her with the advance/retard in the usual position .....?

This type of problem is a nightmare to diagnose from a distance - was she running ok before hand, how long since you last ran her, any excess smoking or anything, have you filled up with what though was petrol in that old can, etc. etc, all questions to ask yourself?
