BSA WD B40 Documentation

Hi

Please excuse my lack of knowledge on this one, I'm fairly new to the subject. I am researching, and looking for information about, the BSA WD B40s built and issued to the RAF between 1968 and 1970.

I have seen a number of RAF Forms 524 - MT Vehicle Record Cards - for these machines which give details such as contract numbers, chassis numbers etc. and they show the details of which RAF stations the motorcycles were issued to, including dates. However, that is more or less all they show, there are no details of repairs, servicing or other work carried out etc.

I have read references to Key Cards for Army machines and was wondering if there were, or should be, Key Cards for these RAF B40s, or are the RAF Forms 524 the RAF equivalent of an Army Key Card?

Any help or assistance on this subject would be welcome.

I am also looking for photographs of RAF WD B40s if anyone can help with this.

Hi Mark

Thanks for the reply, yes I have spoken to the chap who runs that website but he only has knowledge of the RAF Form 524 in respect of the RAF machines, the originals of which are held at the RAF Museum at Hendon.

Re: BSA WD B40 Documentation

Hi Dave, the keycards often mentioned on here don't as far as I know cover any B40s, they are all X,Y or Z registrations which were issued to older vehicles still in service when the new post war registration system was introduced in the late 1940s.

The Royal Logistics Corps Museum at Deepcut might have some info but they charge for the search whether they find anything or not.

Re: BSA WD B40 Documentation

Hi Rob

Thanks for the reply. I have been informed that the Royal Logistics Corps Museum don't have any RAF motorcycle records, only the Army B40 records.

It may well be the case that service and repair records don't exist for the RAF machines as each RAF station MT Section probably undertook such work themselves and it was only recorded in the section/station records. Unlike the Army which had dedicated REME workshops.

This is only a guess really as I am still trying to make contact with someone who worked in a 1970s RAF MT Section who might be able to shed some light on the 'workings' of the Section and the paperwork produced.

Cheers
