I bought a MATCHLESS G3L, supposedly of the British Army, registered in Italian Public Register after WWII, in 1947.
Frame number is 51977, and Engine number 55885.
I wish to know the history of my motobike, and its tank number.
Can anyone help me?

According to Orchard and Madden (peace be upon them), your Frame number makes this an October 1942 machine, while the engine is a bit older, from a November 1941 machine. Going by the frame, the tank number would be C5259377. This is by my reckoning and I will soon be picked up if I got it wrong! That is all the information that your numbers throw up from the book.
