Advance + Retard Lever ... And the other one ????

Evening all,

I'm just trying to familiarise myself with the controls of a BSA M20,

It's been a long while since I rode one, and Im not too sure when to open the levers,? And not really that sure what they actually do

I rember one lever moving something inside the carburettor causing me to go faster ,

Not sure what the other one did,

I don't want to cause any unessasary damage to my engine.

Kind regards,

Mark

Re: Advance + Retard Lever ... And the other one ????

Mark if your controls are positioned correctly and you have the correct mag fitted it's this.
The carb air lever (choke) is on the right next to the throttle. It should be pulled all the way towards you for normal running. In fact I never use mine at all, so you can just forget it if you want.

The lever on the clutch side is you ignition advance/retard lever. Again it should be pulled all the way towards you for normal running so that the ignition is at full advance. If your ignition timing is set correctly, then you'll find you will need to retard the ignition by about 1/3rd (or more) to make the bike easier to start and avoid kick backs. The ignition lever may need some experimenting with for the best start up position. You might also find you may need to retard the ignition when pulling up long hills to avoid pinking......Or change down a gear for more revs. Ron

Don't forget that it depends if you have a right or left hand mag!

Yes that's why I said "correct Mag fitted" which would mean cable on the right side of the points for a tight wire advance. Ron

There's also the exhaust valve decompressor on the left side of the bars.
