Just a very quick and possibly silly question for you. Are Matchless and AJS exhaust/inlet cams the same? Given the different positions of the magneto on the two bikes, is there any difference in the two sets of cams. In other words, can I use AJS cams on a Matchless or are they different??
Bill the cams are the same but they are marked differently for timing purposes. I actually fitted an AJS cam to my G3 that Ed Abbott gave me, but I had to work out the timing mark for myself. Ron
Thanks for that Ron, I knew you'd know. I'm using a pair of Matchless cams in an AJS engine with the mag at the front. That explains why I'm having trouble. I've seen cams marked up with two dots or lines before, would these be the different marks for AJS and Matchless?
Just like Ron said it is possible but bear in mind that they are 120 or 240 degrees out of the Matchless ones. The best thing to do is get some dual marked cams to mark yours up from. It is not something you want to get wrong as each tooth is 20degrees of timing. This will make a very noticeable difference to running and power.

Different performance yes, otherwise, refer to my last post and just use some common sense.
Only point to remebr is that unlik most engines, when you set the valve timing the engine needs to revolve 360 deg to set ignition.
