Paint

I need to order some late war olive drab for a friend to paint his G3L. Which supplier should I go to who will send me paint by post and can you give me a contact number and email if possible. Many thanks, JT

Re: Paint

Are you spraying, brushing or want aerosols ?
Where are you in the world?

Just seen this Ebay #281433836843 (they do bigger amounts) @ Doncaster which is my area, so will be seeing them this weekend to find out what the product is, etc.

I'm in the same position of needing paint - still undecided on the colour - not helped by having to wade through endless colour chips to find a RAL/BS number they can mix to.

At least with olive green drab - you cannot go far wrong ....... or can you?

Re: Paint

Hi,

I am also looking for a good paint to repaint a WM20 41.

I got the current paint from "DEBEER", which a dealer mixed to match an original sample.

Now, if I want to use a standard color, not a special mix,
Will BS381C 224, Deep Bronze Green be correct?
Does it have a conversion to other paint charts, like "Pantone" or so,
I'm, not sure if all manufacturers has aBS381 reference.
And finally, are "Paints R Us" any good?

Re: Paint

I am reluctant to advice about paint products as I have had 30 years of heartache and experimenting and mixing to my own desired colours. I have never found a one stop shop for paint and especially nowadays with 'GREEN' issues where the paint must be safe for a child to drink.
However some of the nicest paint I have used in the past has come from Jeep Parts UK. 'FIRWOOD' brand. Which they will send by courier.

Lately however I have taken to buying a Polyurethane mat paint from a local autopaint shop 'Rainbow Paint' They recently mixed standard 298 Olive Drab for my ML. But I doubt they'll post anything. Ron

Re: Paint

Ron..'Green issues'...very apt...

Be advised, you should wear ear defenders, goggles and a respirator when talking about paint...and don't forget to mention that it may contain nuts.. ...Ian

Re: Paint

Hi Ron and Ian,

Many thanks !

Yes..
How we all survived childhood with no cellphone attached 24/7,
Zipping from the same bottle with other children,
And even drinking water from a hose in the yard or public garden,
Consume sugared drinks, and what else..
Nowadays it seems that everything should come with a booklet
Of side affect, warnings and precautions...

Re: Paint

just to add my two pennith worth,.I have used paints 4 trade to paint both my AFS and WD matchless, the paint is of good quality and they deliver very quickly. Its an enamel paint and I must say the deep bronze green I painted my AFS bike was an exact match and the olive drab was ,well, olive drab !!!
I will shut up now and go and paint my Raliegh runabout !! (don't ask)

Re: Paint

Gordan bennet !!!
This paint thing is annoying.

It seems in Doncaster i am surrounded by paint suppliers/mixers/powder-coaters, actually stuck for choice......

Untill i try and get a colour i like, that is.......

Tried SCC2 - looks too much like a turd and cannot cope with flak from my 'mates'.
Now looking at various Olive-drab's ...... hmmm, looks too U.S.Army.

As the £hw wiull never be very original, will probably paint it Oxford Blue and pretend its an RN bike ?

One thing - is there anything nicer than paint/priming a freshly shot-blasted frame (recommend LSS in Pontefract).... ?

kept me happy for ages - i much prefer brush painting than spraying .......

Re: Paint

I thought the Navy used 'Admiralty Blue'...The railings at HMS Drake in Plymouth would provide a colour sample... .It's about the only thing they use it on these days...

I remember back in the 70s seeing the Navy lorries and other vehicles around Plymouth still in the blue..and the Dockyard Police Triumph T140s...I wonder if anyone has one of those?......Ian

Re: Paint

Never any paint issues here........I go to my local auto-paint specialist with a sample (I could walk there in 15 minutes), say I want a paint matching to said sample and suitable for brushing and spraying and dead-flat matt and he does the rest..................

Available from 1 litre upward, reasonable cost and thinners supplied too............

Every decent town has an auto-paint specialist.......I long gave up going to the specialists as too much hassle............the ML was sprayed in paint from the local auto-motive paint supplier matched to a colour sample..........

Re: Paint

Just get the dark olive drab from jeeparts if you want it one shade darker mix a bit of red oxide with it its all a bit try it and see but it is good paint and they will post a lot of the paint on ebay is nato green not really what you want.

Re: Paint

Guys .... its not getting the right shade - whatever that is, its finding a colour i can live with -

I still fancy some shade or other SCC2, but as famously having special brown leathers made by Crowtree (to look period vintage) - and consequently seeing myself in Classic-Racer looking like a turd on a triumph/norton/rudge, i guess i'm a bit colour sensative ....?

Seeing your Flea (is it ?)in brown, does make me want to go that direction, a change from green.

Think i will keep mixing and driving local paint provider mad .....
Am getting close to painting the 3HW though - Bondaprima now dry and B25 rebuild now finished.

Re: Paint

Actually, when i think about it, Bondaprima when dry, is not far off SCC2 ........
