Modern oil or classic oils

Hi

What oil is best used for the 2 stroke mix and gearbox for the Flying Flea .I have 12ltr of Motorex synthetic 2 stroke oil from my and my son's racing day's and wondered if this would be better, ie cleaner burning better lubrication ?

Thanks

Dave

Re: Modern oil or classic oils

Dont bother with synthetics and certainly dont try and run 50/75/100:1 oil petrol mix in these early strokers.

Use a good semi synthetic oil like MX5 - at whatever the original recommendation was - something like 25/32:1.

My seagull outboard runs 16:1 oil:petrol - it actually loses rpm with less oil - the big-end and mains are bushings - theres not a single rolling element bearing or even a proper seal in the entire engine!

When i raced a pre-war villiers with the VMCC i used 25:1 castrol R30 - same as the TZ i last raced - why; cos it gave more power than any other oil i tested and the TZ crank did at least two year racing (40-50 meetings) between rebuilds - on synthetic they lasted 4 races !
That being said - i do not recommend R or M or anyother veggy oil on the road as it can cause corrrosion problems when left for any time (absorbs water) - smells nice though.

Re: Modern oil or classic oils

Sorry that should have read 8-12:1 oil:petrol mixture in the Seagull !!!!!
At 16:1 it loses rpm.

My MX bikes run 32:1 MX5 - but then again they are not at full throttle for long.

We used R30 early day's , what a lovely smell . Into the 80's used I used MX7 found it burned cleaner than the MX5 . I started the lad off on Mx7 , then as time progressed he ended sponsored by KTM UK. They used MX7 the first year then we ended up on Motorex, thats how I come to have some on the shelf . I ran all mine and his bikes at 32:1 without any problems .

What make of oil and what ratio do people use on the Flea also who's gearbox oils are the best .I really want to use the best from day one

Thanks

Dave

Re: Modern oil or classic oils

Dave - we sell MX7 and MX5 round the jumbles - people like the 'Expensive synthetic stuff' cos it makes them go faster ??????
We race on the MX5 - everything from Bultaco's, Suzuki's, Kawasaki's, Yam's - etc.

My B25 uses MOTUL synthetic cos i was given 50 litres of the stuff, my CCM and my cuz's CCM run Silkolene R30 - mainly due to cam/follower wear problems.

You go with the experiance you have, i have a dyno and blown up more engines than most, i do run the oil the owner wants me to test the engine on - believe me a Manx engine does not like synthetic, neither does a 650 triumph twin!
- i'm also yorkshire and a tight twat, who doesnt like to spend more than i have to!

Been reading a recent SAE/SME report about how cars are suffering more cam wear problems since the advent of synthetic oils and the reduction in lead and zinc in oils due to enviromental reasons .....

Seems older zinc/lead filled oils offered better wear protection ...... progress?
