Hi Guys

What is the best way to clean engine parts like ( Crankcases,Timing covers/Carbs etc )
at home. most of parts are becoming dark grey. I like finishing of soda blasing/ bead blasting , but i dont have budget to do from professional blasting companies.

secondly whats your advise for using rust dissolvers.

If you have a Karcher pressure washer.
you can buy the wet Sandblasting Kit of them.
will work for small surfaces.
don't use it on your car

Soda blasting is cheap and easy to do at home.
All you need is a compressor an air gun with a long nozzle and a length of pvc tube.

make a hole in the pvc tube about 1" longer than the length of the nozzle of you air gun.
Feed the air gun through the tube and seal off the hole with a dolop of silicon.
drop the free end of the tube into a container of soda and you are now soda blasting.

If there is an agricultural supply store near by get your sodium bicarbonate from them in a 25 kg bag.
that will be a lot cheaper than buying it in 1kg boxes from the supermarket.

before we all got filthy rich & bought our own air compressors the usual way to clean bike parts was to use the humble tooth brush. The slightly better off used tooth paste but us paupers bought a bag of Calcium Carbonate which is the abrasive in tooh paste

This is really interesting and sounds easily achievable at home. Am I right in thinking that soda blasting is best suited to cleaning up unpainted aluminium surfaces but that paint/rust removal from tinware etc is best done with sand-blasting?

You use soda to CLEAN a part.
It will remove dirt baked on oil & oxide ( rust ) from all metals.
It will erode paint off eventually but you will have long white hair and yellow curly teeth by the time it dose.
