Probably a bit anal here, but the standard plate affixed to the top of my original filter box has a space above the "Type" box for a "Serial Number".........on mine, this seems to be a 4-digit serial number crudely stamped, followed by a dash, then a much smaller 4-digit number................
Vokes clearly individually numbered their filters..........and I'm doubtful if any records still exist.............
Just to get an idea of the serial numbers for these things, can anyone with an original (not copy) filter quote or photo the respective stamping found on their's ? It may be interesting to get a flavour of exactly the sequence and marks applied to these rare and expensive filters today..............cheers !
I have done some research on the Vokes filters that have been fitted to the Royal Enfield motorcycles.
The Australian WD/C contract (Nov '40 - Aug '41) had Vokes filters fitted. The Australian Vokes filters can be recognised by their Serial number, which was 13895.
Towards the end of the war "all" manufacturers were fitting Vokes filters. The only WD/CO contract that had these filters fitted was RAF contract S/7844 (Oct '44 - Dec '44). The Vokes filters that were used on these late war motorcycles had higher serial numbers.
Thanks for all the post and images.........seems mine may be a 4 or 5 (?) digit followed by a smaller series of numbers.......I'm wondering if these had any relevance on the applications ? Problem seems to be that the original Vokes stampings are non-too precise and rather poor in many instances............
