When i first saw this on Ebay 331340733632 I first thought it might have been an updated version of the ww1 tank machine gunner crews helmet and face vail
to stop bullet splash ( internal metal flake when a round hits the out side of a tank and the conetic energy travel though the metal and forces the skin to blister on the inside of the tank wounding the tommy's in the face area ???

Very interesting, this is about all I can find about it. British WWII Experimental Cruise Visor steel helmet of which only around 5000 were made. they were designed to protect the wearers eyes from small fragments and splinters (so not unlike the chain-mail masks used by Tank crews in WW1). Most were left behind at Dunkirk. The remaining helmets were issued to Home Forces to try out and it turned out that rain or condensation would sit in the mesh, making vision very poor and the water could not easily be shaken out without removing the helmet. The vision problem was even worse at night and the added weight of the visor made the helmet very uncomfortable and it would constantly slip forwards. The experiment seems to have been ended in 1941.

What about this one then? ebay number 151427779901 The seller says it's a glider pilots helmet, but a quick Google shows one chap saying its a Civil Defence pattern used by Dispatch Riders working groups like the National Fire service??
