I see he has the float chamber on the seat...Probably sucked water, a lump of mud or a passing sparrow into the carb... ...Ian

Any ideas as to what the 'Y' number is on the tank? I've seen photos of disused Jeeps (Okinawa?) that have a Y drawn on the bonnets.

it looks like an early production bike valance rear mudguard oil tell tale and front brake rod

It is an early one, ZD 256 was sent to the Dept of Defence, Dublin on 28/03/1940 and is frame/engine number WM20 2335. I haven't got information on the Y sign on the tank.
