Part 2 Vanishing Neutral "HELP"

Hi all

First thanks to Ron and Ian for advice regards the clutch both on and off forum.

I have cleaned up the clutch baskets of burrs and notches, cleaned the burrs off the drive and driven plates, also cleaned the fibre discs up.

The fibre discs each measure 3/32nd. and the total width of the clutch with all plates and discs is about 1" 1/32 to 1" 1/16th, this I was informed was correct.

I took the old clutch spring off, although this measured the correct length 2" 3/8ths, I had no way of testing the tension/pressure in it? (how is this done)

Bought a new spring off Russell Motors, it's one of those made out of round metal.

The clutch was put back together.

Took the gearbox out of the frame to see what the grating noise was when the bike was on tick over in neutral and the gear lever was moved up ever so slightly.

It would appear that someone previously had fitted the wrong part 15-4228 in that the gap between the stops was too wide, it was letting the back of the gear change mechanism pawl t hit the gearbox drive and the rotating kickstart ratchet pinion.

New part from Russell's bought and fitted, there was about 1/8th of an inch difference in the width of the gap.

To my inexperienced eye and limited mechanical knowledge the gear box appeared to change gear ok on the work bench?

Gear box and clutch refitted, new clutch rod 1/8th inch longer made.

All slack taken out of cable and clutch lever on handlebar.

The gear box does not grate when on tick over and the gear lever moved up ever so slightly up.

The clutch appears to be freeing off when the lever pulled in, could see the discs and plates freeing.

I cannot select 1st gear at standstill on tick over,

I am able to select second gear, pull away it will also go into third gear.

On braking to a stop it will not select first.

I am able to get it into neutral.

It is making a grating noise when trying to select second to pull away.

I am now stuck and need some advice as to how to adjust the Gear Control Rod if thats what need Doing ?????

Try lengthening the selector rod by one turn.
