Is this correct that we now have to get these bikes MOTed, I just saw on my renewal form the following:

THIS VEHICLE NEEDS AN APPROPRIATE MOT TEST CERTIFICATE

I've recently moved into the wilds of west wales and have no idea where I can take it to get MOTed?

That is just standard paperwork. Pre 1960 vehicles are MOT exempt. Ron

If they are in the DVLA data base as MANUFACTURED before 1-1-60....

In the case of some military bikes the record is incorrect and shows a manufacture date later than 1960....

My own M20 for example is shown as registered and manufactured in 1968 and it is therefore not MOT exempt currently.

Eligibility for MOT exemption is determined by the recorded date of manufacture, but don't assume because you know it was built in say 1944, that the DVLA know that as well... ...Ian

Yes, mine too. The date on the V5 is the date of its release from military service and so it seems to be a 1961 model. The date of course is as it says on the form 'the date of first registration'. That it seems is what determines the need for an MOT, or am I wrong?

If your M20 was registered in 1961 on its release from the forces but was shown in the DVLA record to have a date of manufacture of 1941 it would be MOT exempt...

If it was registered in 1961 but was shown in the DVLA record to be manufactured in 1961 then it would not be MOT exempt...

Date of first registration is irrelevant to eligibility for MOT exemption...ONLY THE DATE OF MANUFACTURE in the DVLA record matters...

You can check the date of manufacture shown in the DVLA records for your vehicle on their 'vehicle enquiry' website....Ian

Check your V5C first though.
This is the bottom of the outside cover of a V5C for a Royal Enfield I have that shows a date of 1997 inside the cover as the date of first registration. It's one of several I have like this. But DVLA have excepted it's date of manufacture and entered it in 'Special Notes' Ron
