Hello i am Brandon Gary's son. In November i will be 17. I have recently brought a royal enfield flying flea 125cc which i think is a WD. But when i kick it over the clutch slips, after 5 to 10 kicks it will start but when i bump start it the clutch is ok puling away and going through the gears. I adjusted the clutch so there was the right amount of play. But is still slips


any idea's ???

If you look in the manual you are meant to bump start it, half the problem with the clutches are the corks with there only being one plate any problem is amplified it would probably work more successfully if there were more plates. The corks vary in sponginess on the plate so when hot some will swell up more than others and also when the bike is stored for any period of time the springs will compress the corks slightly reducing its effectiveness. Humidity also plays a part, with wet corks more spongy than dry ones. I found my clutch works better when I run it without oil, I simply lubricate the chain with chain lube. I was looking into getting the solid fibre inserts in mine as it would certainly make for a more reliable clutch. As soon as I get round to it I will report back

What about the washers that can be found sometimes under the bolts that hold the clutch springs?? there are NOS clutches on the market, for not too much money.

I used a NOS clutch on mine and before I fitted it i gave a squeeze to each of the corks with my fingers there was quite a difference in the pressures require to squeeze them so working on the theory that they'd shrunk with age I boiled the clutch plate in a pan of water and sure enough the corks welled up and then they seemed to feel about similar with the squeeze test so I put the plate on knowing that it would squash down a little bit over the next day or so so I kept readjusting it until it worked ok, what I now notice is that occasionally it will slip on the first kick but once it has run for a couple of minutes it will be ok, that's why I'm looking to fit some fibre inserts from a different clutch as people think there is something wrong with your bike if you have to bump it to start it!
