Speedo needle not moving problem, repairable?

Hi Guys,
The Smiths speedo on my bike has started playing up,the speedo is till recording mileage but the needle has stopped moving to indicate speed, at one point the needle swung round to max reading and stayed there.
Is this a minor fix or does it need to be sent away for repair.

any advice would be appreciated.

Re: Speedo needle not moving problem, repairable?

It's probably not broken, just dirty. It's quite a delicate clock work and just a little dirt makes it stop working. If you send it away it will cost you 100 pounds easily to get it fixed and if it's just dirt then it's an expensive repair for little work.

Take a look at this page of the website.

Mine did the same.....tracked cause to broken speedo cable...best to check that first

Thanks for the advice guys, will take it apart and have a look, it could be something simple as its still recording the mileage, just the needle that is not moving.

If I remember there is a little arm that pushes the ratchet wheel round. I had a speedo where it went over centre, it was easily put right.

The clutch in the escape wheel is slipping. Not a simple job. http://www.hells-confetti.com/Technical%20data/Jaeger%20Instruments/Carl%20Cederstrand%20on%20the%20Chronometric%20mechanism.pdf
