Felt washers

Hi all
About to refit motor over the week end and I have bought new felt washers for the chain case and other bits as needed .
My question is do you use anything on the felt is gasket sealer, welseal or greese .? Or do you just apply them dry

Regards

Re: Felt washers

I thought the idea of the felt was to absorb oil over time and stop splashes coming out and not as an oil tight gasket. I put them in dry but they're soon covered in oil.

Re: Felt washers

I stick the felt chaincase gasket in place (to the back of the casing) using clear silicone and leave the front face where the sliding plate sits dry....

Make sure the sliding plate moves pretty freely after the two special retaining bolts/nuts are tightened up...

I also use silicone on the gasket that fits between the inner chain case and the crankcase (both sides) and the same on the footrest support assembly cork gaskets...

The outer chaincase cork gasket I stick into the outer cover with silicone and just grease it where it sits against the inner casing...

For the primary chain inspection cover in the outer I use a suitably sized 'O' ring and fibre washers for the level and drain plugs....Ian
