Re: Britain at Bay

A wonderful piece of propaganda. It brings a lump to the throat...

If you'd like to see more of 4th Royal Northumberland Fusilier's Big 4 outfits then this British Pathé film is worth a look.

Spare a thought for the Poor Bloody 16H rider !

Gary/Rik -

Enjoyed both immensely! Many thanks!

(It's not propaganda when it's true).

Re: Britain at Bay

The term 'propaganda' doesn't seem to have been percieved as prejudicial during the early 1940s.

This is the extract from 4 RNF's diary relating to the making of the newsreel film :-

Re: Britain at Bay

Yes, and all in a field very near here;

Although we searched for the exact location for hours (with Jan en Rik)

Some we did find;

Re: Britain at Bay

Great films, and well done to Lex, Rik and Jan for finding the place. That's not an easy thing to do

Re: Britain at Bay

The credit goes to Lex who first found the major locations on Google Street View.

I'm looking forward to rebadging the 16H to do it properly...but Lex has to promise not to park 'Le Big' on top of me.

Re: Britain at Bay

Those were only the preliminary shots, we'll be back with a handful of B4's, one M20, and some 16H's in 2015, to do the pictures again with the bikes, to get the Dingo's would be a bit difficult!!

Here's another one, the church in Le Croq;

Dingo one of the above!! in Achincourt;

Cheers,

Lex

ps, have made loads of Then and Now pictures, have posted some before, that Jan made, can repost if enough interest??

Re: Britain at Bay

Hi

I would love to see them!

Maybe somewhere more permanent could be found on the Forum (sorry Henk - I know this not quite what the site is for) where they could be a permanent exhibit - would love to visit the sites as a TOUR..

Re: Britain at Bay

Hi,

I would like to see more, very interesting.
Or a link to the earlier post.

Thanks, Menno

Re: Britain at Bay

Cannot find the old posts, so here some more;

Nothing to do with bikes, but it has 2 wheels!! not exactly same spot, but 200 yards away, have to do it again sometime in the right spot!!

You all figure out what's the original!!

Here some we took on the French/Belgium border;

Even found the original beerglass!! the woman lives in same house now as the woman in the original picture!

Have to upload more pictures, then I'll post more.

Re: Britain at Bay

And some more;

Due to terrible traffic conditions from french drivers, it was impossible to take the exact pictures (since the tabbacco on the Belgian side is a lot cheaper, you get a lot of "tourists") The rain didn't help much either! these pictures were all taken almost on the day that it happened 70 years ago! (March 1940)

Another one, that was very difficult to find!!;

A garage was built on the l/h. side of the house!! and the brick hous on left had new windows fitted, so the amount of bricks were not the same, and was difficult to convince Jan that it must be the right spot, the life of a brick (rivet) counter........

Cheers,

Lex

Re: Britain at Bay

Hi Lex,

Very nice. Amazing some of the buildings still have the same business
as 70 years ago. The other one is on the border of Belgium and..the Netherlands?
Nice hobby, but it must take you a lot of time finding the exact spots.

cheers Menno

Re: Britain at Bay

Well done Lex, Jan and Rik. I'm amazed you found these places

Horror
Well done Lex, Jan and Rik. I'm amazed you found these places [/quote]

It's not easy. It involves drinking beer in vicarages, pastis in Chateau kitchens and spirits at the Mayor's house....a dangerous, risky task but someone has to do it !

Lex even added to it by committing an open container violation whilst in charge of a motor vehicle. Thank goodness it's Europe !
