Having read lots of moaning on various forums about the difficulty of registering a vehicle as Historic or getting MOT exemption, I think I should praise DVLA for once. I got my M20 dated by the MVT a month ago, I sent my V5 off 10 days ago asking for a change of date of manufacture to 1940. Expecting to get an age related plate. I was amazed to get my V5 back today with the original 1967 number and date of manufacture 1940. So well done DVLA, or was I just lucky.

Either you were lucky or the DVLA have changed the system again.. ..

When I tried to get a change of date of manufacture for my 68 registered (and manufactured according to the DVLA) WD M20, I was told that the DVLA would not accept a dating certificate as proof of date of manufacture...

Rather, they wanted a copy of the relevant 'Glasses Guide' or a copy of the BSA manufacturing records (held by the VMCC)...Ian

The DVLA in my experience are a bunch of tossers. They spent 6 months on my case and even wanted the original 1961 army release papers, then wanted me to get a 'stamped certified copy of a record' from the British Motor Industry Heritage Trust, who only deal with cars!!!! What planet do they live on??
A friend of mine has bought a 1942 Ex WD bike, with an up to date V5 and they will not return it to him because the bike sitting in his garage has been 'exported'. If there is ever a mistake it is never there fault!
So yes Dave you were just lucky.

DVLA, I must catch them on a good day, Ive just received my age related number for my 3HW and all documents returned in 8 days. This not being a 'one off' as Ive never had problem with any of my 4 bikes, just lucky or they feel sorry for the old duffer

I've just registered this with DVLA. I'd heard rumours that DVLA would require a NOVA declaration from HMRC, regardless if the vehicle was imported or not. I contacted HMRC who told me that it wasn't required, but they'd heard the same rumours and would process my application if DVLA insisted.

I got a dating letter from 'The Velocette Owners Club' and filled out the DVLA registration and MOT exemption forms and sent in my application with a covering letter explaining what HMRC had told me, along with insurance cert (on frame number) and pictures of frame/eng numbers and the bike.

DVLA rejected my initial application, asking for more proof of the age of the bike??

So the VOC sent me another dating letter which they padded out a bit, and a curt sentence stating that the first letter was the type that had been accepted by DVLA for well over 20 years. I also added an extract from O&M to pad it out some more.

DVLA then rubber stamped my application within a few day.

Hi Dave,
I've just bought a 1945 BSA M20 from Ireland. It's known to the forum (Frame and engine 108159) but I, obviously, need to get something from a recognised Club, etc. to verify the build date as 1945. You mentioned the MVT - could you educate who the MVT is, who I should contact there, and how much they charge for the dating service?
