The other day I bought a set of spring callipers on Ebay which were described as 6inch, when they arrived I was quite disappointed that they actually measured 7inchs in length. But now I'm wondering if I have been looking at this in the wrong war, these callipers seem to be for measuring the outside of an object up to 6inchs in diameter.

So how would you read this.

Measuring impliments are generally described by what they measure.
Most 1" micrometers and a lot bigger than 1"

That's true, it appears to be a different system with different class's of tools.

FA13281 Files, flat, smooth, 6in. The 6inch bit doesn't include the tang for the handle.

FA16885 Shears, tinmans, Scotch, 16in. This is an overall tool length, the cutting length being about 3inchs.

So I will call these 7inch callipers 6inch.

I think so Rob. Like a 2" calliper would not be 2" long. More like 4" long.
