some 7 years ago I brought a petrol tank for my B31 plunger from a chap who said it was from a bike he was breaking more as a spare I didn't even look at it closely just put it into stock if you like the original tank on the bike was sealed but the ethanol in petrol is melting it there was even a crust of sealant round the needle got this tank out of stock and gave it a good look it is almost like new apart from a poor paint job no chrome there is a broken screw in one hole where the badge goes were there Indian tanks on the market 7 years ago

Short answer yes. The one on my B33 was bought over 10 years ago.

Long answer, yes.. ...I've now had 7 Indian tanks pass though my hands for one reason or another...As with most Indian parts the quality was variable..

I got an M20 tank (non cut off type) for a friend that he converted to an M33 tank...That worked well..

Three 'export' T120 tanks (unit construction models)...These were very nicely made and I believe may have come from a different manufacturer to the others listed here...No problems with these apart from very minor dimensional differences in the mounting holes that required some simple 'adjustment' to make them fit..

An early pattern 'large' M20 tank...This one looked OK but I didn't try it on a frame and to date the chap I sold it to hasn't fitted it..

A tank for my own rigid B33...This one fitted OK but needed a little work on the petrol cap neck to get a 'bayonet' type cap to fit correctly...About 15 minutes work with a file..

And finally a pre war T100 tank...This one was awful...The tank mountings were a long way out from the correct position, the overall dimensions of the tank were not really correct and it wasn't symmetrical..
The deep recesses that these tanks have for the knee grip rubbers were all over the place...Of them all this was the one I felt should have gone into the scrap bin...

Also worth noting, if you intend to use your bike much, the Indian chrome is pretty hopeless..I got the chrome stripped off my B33 tank and there wasn't anything under it (copper/nickel)...So it will probably look OK for a while and then it will rust...

I would recommend looking at the photos very carefully before buying an Indian tank...Some of the BSA ones just aren't the right shape I would say and I remember a comment about a Norton Roadster tank from another forum member stating the same thing...

Tap out all the threads before spraying the tank and fill it with fuel to make sure it doesn't leak. I haven't had that problem myself but I've heard of leaking Gold Star tanks..

On the plus side the tanks are very heavily constructed and don't have rusted out seams etc. as in some older tanks...plus they're available, so at least you can get something to work with...

My B33 tank has passed all the initial tests and is now at the powder coaters having a high zinc base coat applied prior to me spraying it...Ian

I know a chap who bought an Indian BSA tank and his thoughts are the same as Ians. The tank itself isn't too bad, but the first thing he did was have the chrome stripped and got it redone properly.
