Hi all,
Wondering if anyone has encountered this. I have a fairly conventional m20 with recently rebuilt dynamo, mechanical regulator and headlamp switch with an ammeter. Pressing on the other day, , well as much as you can on an m20, and saw the meter go berserk for just a moment, backing off a bit ( less vibes). What is confusing me is that it has done this as a discharge and over charge. Thoughts appreciated Ian
Had the same thing. A wire was chafing going into the headlight bucket. Of course when shorting the regulator thinks the battery needs a boost to keep up each time it shorts while running, thus the ammeter going positive across the dial. Elementary my dear Watson.
In my case, I took the sidecar off,
But did not insulate the wire going to its light.(Mudguard indicator)
From time to time it would rattle and momentarily touch the chassis
And short circuit.
You must have an insulation problem somewhere. (The bike, I mean)
In the headlight, Brake light or horn circuit, (Horn gets permanent positive)
Or under the regulator, in the connections there.
Less common, is a problem with the regulator function.
I had a similar problem the ammeter would go full charge it turned out to be a fault in the horn even it didn't sound when I stripped it down it was full of rust but still worked
Hi all, thanks for the top tips. Suspect the problem was in the headlamp shell. My bike has a modern pattern ammeter and the posts are a bit long, think part of the shell was touching as the vibes went up. Insulated them with some old silicone tube and seems to have cured it, also explains why it was random plus then minus :)
