I was at the Isle of Wight Steam Show, with a bike that had wet sumped and was proving difficult to start due to a clutch full of oil. Fortunately, the bike started and made it into the arena. Unfortunately, it was having none of it on the way out and required a push. So, there I was, contemplating a strip-down on site and heard a voice above me saying 'I'm glad mine started on Sword Beach!' Mr Carpenter (he did tell me his Christian name but, with my memory being what it is, I've forgotten it. Sorry) then recounted his Sword Beach landing behind a tank that helped part the waves and clear a path, delivering a message to a darkened airfield where he saw headlights from an approaching vehicle...that turned-out to be an aircraft trying to land on the same strip of tarmac and, later, carefully negotiating a mine field until he reached safe passage courtesy of the RE.
'Take a seat' I said and, in a flash, he swung his leg over quicker than I could which was mightily impressive for someone of 90!
Lovely chap, great to meet him and proves that maintenance should be 100% at all times.
