Ask for details...

Ask for the explanatory leaflets and read the small print...That's something I've just been reminded of again...

I sent a restored Dynamo recently using the 48hr Royal Mail delivery service...The item was insured as well...or rather it wasn't...

When the (well packed) parcel arrived the irreplaceable NOS Bakelite end cover was in three pieces and the brush band cover and sealing cork were damaged...

Frankly, to manage this the parcel must have been dropped off a loading bay or something...

Anyway a claim was put in to at least get some recompense, even though I don't know where you could by a replacement NOS end cover...

However, the claim was rejected because in the small print it states 'automotive parts' are not covered....

As nearly everything I post falls into that category that causes somewhat of a problem from my point of view....

As I send a low number of parcels waiting in half the day for a courier pick up each time isn't really practical and there is no 'drop off point' for one of the parcel couriers within 10 miles of where I live...

However, all that is not the point of this post...If you are sending a parcel by 'insured' postage check carefully that it is actually insured and not excluded by that damned 'small print'..... ..Ian

Re: Ask for details...

Should have put Militaria on the form......

Re: Ask for details...

I had no reason to do that as I thought it was covered...

Rather, that is the whole point of my post...Ensure that what you think is covered is covered when you insure a parcel......

Also, in most cases, if I was asked to provide any evidence of damage a misdescribed object probably wouldn't pass muster...Most of what I post wouldn't be described as militaria....

'This is a militaria piston'....Mmmm....Ian

Re: Ask for details...

Hi Ian,

Isn't there a way around it?
If it is a "teaching aid" to teach about the magnetic flux,
or if it was used on a "Clifford" (I know that there isn't one there.. )
Would it still be regard as "automotive parts"?

Secondly,
If you paid for insurance separately (?) and they took your money,
Then they should compensate you..

Proving that it was not packed already damaged, however, would be impossible..
What do they need in order to believe?
2 witnesses and a notary stamp?... they will never pay anyone...

Noam.

Re: Ask for details...

FWIW the IATA standard for proper packaging reqires that a parcel should be able to withstand a drop from waist height onto a concrete floor without damage.
The logic behind this is that the sorting belts used in parcel depots used to be at waist height and a lot of parcels fall off the belt onto the concrete floor of the warehouse.
If the package was not 0able to withstand the "drop test " then it was considered a "hand load" item and that attracts an extra premium.
I don't know how many times I have tried to explain this to a customer and the fact that a "fragile" sticker does not cut the mustard she it comes to parcel handling

Re: Ask for details...

Hi Noam...It really is stretching credibility IMO to try and come up with alternative titles/uses for a lot of what I post...

Parts of engines and many cycle parts obviously fall under the category of 'automotive parts'...

The point of my post regarding insurance is that if you assume because you have paid for insurance something is, in fact, insured may not be the case...

The leaflets regarding the terms and conditions are available and it is deemed the responsibility of the purchaser of the service to read those and ensure that the conditions meet the requirements...

So, there is no liability on the part of the post office to go through all the details every time...They just give you the leaflet...

And that is where I made the mistake...Like most people I didn't read all the detail before sending and insuring the parcel....and that is what I am highlighting....

To be sure the parcel is insured you MUST read the small print as there are 'conditions'....

The post office do seem to accept without contention that any damage you report was caused 'in transit'...and I imagine if the item did not contravene the 'small print' of the insurance scheme they would pay out...Ian

Re: Ask for details...

And further to Ians comment.
In order to make a claim, you must have the original packaging.
Any idea how many broken "antiques" are carefully packed into a box and posted for the purpose of making a claim ?

Re: Ask for details...

Boy, do I ever know THAT feeling, Ian. EXACT same thing happened to me over here a couple of years ago - irreplaceable original Lucas Pre War dynamo end cover broken into the SAME THREE pieces as yours, I suspect. I didn't even bother with trying to collect damages due to the time/energy frustration factor. Never going to get complete satisfaction due to the irreplaceable nature of the item. Found the usual fairly decent repro (UK) and just moved on mentally.

Just to let you know you are not "alone".

Re: Ask for details...

Hi Bruce...I'm not actually too worried about the money aspect in this case, though you feel you should get something if someone hasn't done their job properly at your cost.......It's the loss of a hard to find NOS part which is really frustrating.

When I sent a complete set of parts for my WB30 (of which there are only seven known examples) to the cadmium platers they went tracked, signed for and special next day delivery and I told the plater if he lost anything I'd have to kill him and probably his family as well.... ....

Frankly, I didn't really sleep too well until I got it all back....Ian
