Robert, I already replied on HMVF. No doubt you will get more info here though.
Here is my reply to save typing it again.
Robert until you can find a copy of the book Ed mentioned. Your bike is the 1135th bike from contract C8886 for 3000 built Oct 44- Feb 45. I calculate your tank census number as C4855314. Your engine is from the previous contract S5340. For some reason, Triumph numbered the engines 10.000 ahead of the frame number.
As Ian said there is a date on top of the saddle tube which starts TEC (Triumph Engineering Co).
It's strange because the census numbers for this contract follow on from a contract in 1942, with all other contracts since having higher numbers than yours? Maybe there was some confusion or hold ups in the system after the factory was bombed in 1940 and then the move to temporary premisses in Warwick and another move to the Meriden works???
Triumph singles stuff is hard to find, but first try Les at Russell Motors on 02072281714.(no email) His brother Geoff had some NOS speedo drives, but I think they are all gone, but he has other WD Trumpet stuff. So worth an email to gjmyers@mac.com
Ron, I think that you're spot-on. The contract was dated 11/10/1940 and Triumphs were bombed in November. Either this contract was retained for eventual OHV production, or more likely they simply overlooked that it was still 'open'. Contract C8079 had balance cancelled due to enemy action with the last deliveries taking place on 7/11/1940.
Production was scheduled under C8886 at 850 per month commencing November 1944. However, production under S5340 (4000 machines) had been scheduled for 800 per month so either they made them more quickly or December was the true start date.
Been a bit of a journey getting the bike home this afternoon but I managed to get a few pictures of the 3HW in the fading light. They're not the best but I will post some more when the sun next shows itself!
I'm pleased with the bike, it clearly needs a lot of work doing but I'm in no hurry. Just need to start the hunt for missing items, in specific the speedo drive! If any one can help it would be greatly appreciated other than that I'll need to keep an eye out at the jumbles!
I would appreciate any thoughts on the bike, not being very familiar yet with this model I'm sure you will be able spot any wrong parts or obvious issues!
I was told that it last ran 4 years ago and so shouldn't be too hard to get running again, but we'll see. My first priority is to get it running and then sort the mechanics followed by the cosmetics.
Ah! doesn't look like I can post any pictures???? Any idea's how to do this?
Hussein Sayed may have some parts for them, I saw some pictures of his shop/store room a while back and he certainly has a mountain of WD bike spares. He's a little bit awkward to deal with as you have to try and haggle via email! But I've always got the parts from him at the price I wanted to pay. His email is sl_hussein@yahoo.com his English is a little bit poor, but he always delivers the goods
