Evening

I recently bought a 'clutch extractor tool' off the internet as I knew I was going to need it for a job. It is many years since I last had to use one, not being able to find my original I bought the afore mentioned. I have tried to use the tool this evening only to find the extractor bolt apparently hopelessly too short. I am missing a trick, doing something wrong etc., as it has defeated me!

See if a small socket placed in the bore will give you the extra length you need. Anything that will fit into the cavity and is about the same diameter as the extractor bolt will do, as long as it doesn't damage the end of the transmission shaft...needs to fit well enough to stay centered and hard enough not to distort too much when pressure is applied.

I ran into the same situation with my single spring clutch tool. The bolt with the tool was short when trying to compress the spring to loosen the big nut holding it in place. I got a longer bolt to solve the problem and simply compressed the spring, loosened the big nut a bit, released the spring, put in a thick washer to take up the extra length of the longer bolt, then compressed the spring again and removed the large nut.

I used a 1/4" diameter bolt with a nut screwed all the way up it to make up the extra space...

The shank of the bolt fits into the hole in the mainshaft keeping it central and the nut and the head of the bolt provided sufficient extra length (in my case)...

Seems the bolt on everyones extractor tool is too short.... ..

Ensure the extractor is screwed fully into the clutch sleeve, tighten the bolt until some pressure is applied and then give the head of the bolt a sharp tap with a hammer to 'shock' the sleeve and mainshaft tapers to break the fit...

Don't try to just wind the clutch sleeve off, you will probably strip the thread on the extractor...

If the taper doesn't break first time, apply some more pressure to the bolt and tap it again...It will part after a couple of attempts.....Ian

Thank you all for your advice - I now feel manly enough again for the job in hand, as well as adequately equipped knowledge wise, even although my extractor is clearly too short!
