have got the Bike back on the road last weekend.
i am the new owner of this bike.
%%htmlItem_1%%
just had to collect it from mid NSW.(Australia) - picked up in early October2013 .
as i am in melbourne -so a 800 mile drive each way.
hired a 'ute' to pick it up -son and i left melbourne in the evening - after about 6 hrs -around 1am - turned off the freeway (mototrway) .
hmm a few Kangaroos about at the side of the road . slowed a bit - then around a corner was 3 actually on the road - bang. damaged the hire ute - tehre goes my excess. but continued on and collected the bike -
%%htmlItem_2%%
%%htmlItem_3%%
came with 3/4 of another engine...- can see it in back of the ute
turned around and another 12 hrs journey back to melbourne. -was aloooong weekend.
the frame numbers indcate it a late 1942 bike.
and puts it in the middle of the frame numbers for the other 1942 australian (owned) bikes on this site-.
This one isnt on the list
back home :
%%htmlItem_4%%
%%htmlItem_5%%
%%htmlItem_6%%
%%htmlItem_7%%
%%htmlItem_8%%
came with a helmet:
%%htmlItem_9%%
and some canvas pannier bags - maybe not correct but anyways ..
%%htmlItem_10%%
this still has the matching engine number:
Engine no & Frame no are :WM20 57791
Henk - any info on those ?
So after collecting had to go back overseas for work – didn’t get back until jan 2014 .
Started to do bits and pieces to get it ready for the roadworthy (MOT).
Here is Australia each state has its own registration laws (bit like England ,Scotland ,wales, northern Ireland all having different rules)- but here in Victoria they have ‘club permit registration’for vehivhles over 25 years old – basically have a log book to fill in each use and get 45 (or 90 days use ) – but still need a road worthy to obtain it.
so for $70 can get 45 days use (inc insurance) versus normal full registration for $700. for a year.
The club I am in, substitutes a check and letter by the club scrutineer rather than a roadworthy from a licenced vehicle tester.
..more to come...
Cracking bike Nine! You'll need to get a move on if you want a club scrutineer's check - VicRoads are about to change to a RWC-only testing regime.
Very nice! Good that you posted some pictures....

Sven

so after getting back in jan from work overseas ..
started to get it ready for the road by early april - there is the 'all british rally' around easter time /anzac day at newstead (near castlemaine ) in vic .
about 250 british bikes get out for a two day weekend.
so whilst the bike looked all good -was few things to do
first up was get a new battery - still had to old resin cased 6v thingy - completely dead:
replaced with a modern looking one - looks abit out of place - but will get to and paint black -or somefink. i think you can buy ye olde style cases to put a new battery in - anyways getting on the road more important
%%htmlItem_1%%
now i had power could check the lights - hmm head light needed a bit of fiddling to get working-
%%htmlItem_2%%
due to being able to fix a blown bulb out in the sticks -
the headlight has two separate filaments in it - both same wattage -
presumeably when filament one blew , you opened headlight casing , and transferred wire over to the other terminals - and hey presto still have main beam.
wasnt sure where to set the focus , but will fiddle with that latter
...- those new fangled pre focus bulbs were some way in the future.
%%bbCodeItem_1%%
new set of rubber grips to replace the perished ones
-
%%htmlItem_3%%
was missing a horn and horn button - so got one from modak motorcycles in melb - not orig horn - but a 6v jap one - very shiny...
%%htmlItem_4%%
ahh thats better :
%%htmlItem_5%%
stuffed around with the generator - wasnt charging - and needed to be positive earth (as that whats the regulator was )
still couldnt get it charging - so will run on battery for a while
%%htmlItem_6%%
the speedo cogged drive thingy was missing off the front wheel - so rather than stuff about a $15 bicycle speedo added :
%%htmlItem_7%%
cleaned out yea olde carb float bowl - leaks like a sieve:
its anlooks like an Amal 276
unusually the one i have has a brass body (usually were somealuminium diecast alloy)
talking to a bloke in the club - said that were cast by a aussie company 'all spares' in adelaide in the late 40's /50's
he told me that , post WW2 some enetrprising aussies got some landing craft , went up to the beaches of new guinea and collected brass shell cases. came back to aust and started sand casting carbs (and presemably other bits) not sure if that bit is true - but anyways ...
Allspares i think they were called.
Amal parts fit them .presumeably a direct copy
- anyways someone post war has installed one of the brass bodied carbs with the orig Amal float bowl .
need to clean that up to get the needle to seal-wasnt too successful - floods - but can get it started .
will need to look and maybe lap it in .
%%htmlItem_8%%
can see brass body carb this photo - still has the external mixing holes
%%htmlItem_9%%
so after getting it all fettled in early april -was ready to take to club scrut .
started it up in back yard (had had it running before) but now was horrible sctreeching noise from primary chaincase.
quickly stop it and look down - a bolt (or two) had fallen out of holding the case to the crankcase and was being chewed up by the primary chain .
damn.
%%htmlItem_10%%
anyways ran out of time and spent the next two months all May to end june in PNG for work( ….NOT collecting shellcases….)
so left it till i got back
did go to the all british rally though
digressing – some M20’s at the rally :
did go to the all british rally though
%%htmlItem_1%%
%%htmlItem_2%%
another one with aust made desrt a/tropical air filetr:
%%htmlItem_3%%
%%htmlItem_4%%
%%htmlItem_5%%
%%htmlItem_6%%
%%htmlItem_7%%
and still going :!
%%htmlItem_8%%
%%htmlItem_9%%
town of maldon - so long as its british :
%%htmlItem_10%%
Very nice pictures, especially the packed-up BSA !
(by the way, what happened to the kangaroo....?)
G'day 9tritons,
Allparts carbs were made by David Beenham's (Modak) uncle around the early '50's as parts from England were in short supply. I think David still has stock of these carb bodies.

"...about 250 British bikes get out for a two day weekend."
A bit light there Nine! We had nearly 1000 visitors to this year's ABR and about 650 Brit bikes at Newstead. There were even more bikes (of all nationalities) at Maldon on Saturday afternoon!
There was a good selection of Beezer sidevalves there - did you see Rick Baddock's 720 that seems to have brass plating everywhere? (Rick has been coming up from Tassie to the ABR for years)
Is the 'finned' top on the Concentric carb an Aussie after market goodie or home made?...Ian
email (option): ian@wright52.plus.com
Ian, that carb top and bellmouth is a home made job as have never seen one before like that and I have been playing with Amal carbs for at least twenty years as a hobby. I am Australia's copy of Martyn B and buy parts off him. I also ended up with the carbs and parts from Allparts Adelaide when they closed in the late 1980's and tell the story of the shells being picked up off the New Guinea beaches by the natives after World War 2. It appears that 9tritons may be in the VMCC in Victoria and spoke to me? It is not wise to drive in the country around dawn dusk or during the night for fear of hitting a kangaroo and even worse in the outback (Crocodile Dundee territory)where you have wild horses, camels. I told a mate exactly that but he being young and wiser drove through the night in the outback and hit a young camel writing off his car and putting himself and girlfriend in hospital for several days. When 9tritons picked the bike up in New South Wales you will notice in the picture that all of the cars are parked in reverse which is different to all other states in Australia.
John
Thanks John...I was hoping I might be able to buy a couple for my T120....
Life can be similarly risky where I live...On Dartmoor the ponies, cattle and sheep all roam freely. The sheep like to sit on the road at night during the summer as the tarmac retains the heat long after dark...and many of the cattle and ponies are black or dark brown....You have to be careful with M20 lights in particular...
I hit a pony one night one my B33....Killed the pony, bent the frame, forks, Handle bars, front wheel rim, front mudguard etc. etc....Luckily I only hurt my foot..
...Badgers, foxes, deer and lately, wild boar are also additional hazards, not to mention the smaller nocturnal animals...hedgehogs, rabbits and owls...It's a menagerie out there...

And John forgot to mention WOMBATS.
Being only 15" tall and musky grey you can not see them at all after dark.
For some strange reason they always seem to waddle along the road till you get near them then they dart directly across your path.
Stops you faster than tank trap.
The native fauna got it right.
Feed at dusk , frolick all night long, feed at dawn then find some where warm ( in winter ) or cool ( in summer ) and sleep all day. Some how I keep hearing Noel Coward doing a ditty about mad dogs & Englishmen.
Didn't get to the All British this year as the landlord went to the International So I was farm sitting.
Cows are not much better, never really understood the "Bovine Stupidity" insult till I moved to the farm.

And as for the reverse angle parking, it is a local council ordnance not a state thing so it gets really confusing.
I had run a transport company for near 30 years and was constantly taking that one to court & won every case.
Reverse parking is a safety thing as you can see what is in or near the place you are going to park as you have to go past it before you can reverse into it.And you are in the traffic lin so you know what is behind you.
Reversing out into the traffic and you have no idea what is behind you and can not see if the oncoming traffic is going to allow you out or not.
My "killer" piece of evidence is a photo of a 10 year old girl on a low slung push bike, behind one of our vans, looking over her shoulder at the on comming traffic.
Totally invisible to the driver till you turn her into dog meat.
My beak usually brough some accident stats to clinch the deal.
A staggeringly large number of pedisterians seriously injured by cars driving into a parking spot at traffic speeds and not seeing them sitting on the kerb, kneeling by the door etc.
Where as if you reverse in you first have to stop the reverse which is not easy to do turning a corner at 60 kph but too easy to drive in at 60 kph.

Thanks 9tritons I have worked it out now, nice looking bike you have. They are getting hard to find in one piece and the parts are getting dearer by the day.
Regards John
ok so after 2 months overseas for work : back at beginning of july got back into it :
first things first - take the primary case apart and work out where the loose bolts were :
foot pegs off :
%%htmlItem_1%%
pull the 20 screws off holding the pressed steel case together - and there is the chewed up bolt - and the others are loose:
%%htmlItem_2%%
noticed the primary chain was tight as a drum - hmmm- and no gasket on the case halfs- to keep the oil in.
i put the bolt back in - bit like key hole surgury with the engine sprocket still on.
also at a swap meet got one of these rubber dohickeys that cover the clucth lever (-and open hole with clutch rod into the gear box)-
%%htmlItem_3%%
%%htmlItem_4%%
anyways, the club scrutener checked it over and gave ame a lsit of bits to fix /adjust. :
loose rear spokes
mirror bracket not up to scratch
replace some cables
tidy wiring .
grease the suspension linkages -and replace a few missing grease nipples
adjsut rear chain
fix what looks like loose gearbox mounting
and a few other minor bits n pieces
so tackle the loose rear spokes - of course you cant just tighten with wheel in the frame - 70 years of rust and paint have locked all the spokes solid in the nipples .
ok now need to remove rear wheel to get a good access:
the bike is missing the centre stand - so need to suport it : strap it up to a ladder and get get the wheel out .
have bought a centre stand - not fitted as yet
%%htmlItem_5%%
as these w%%htmlItem_6%%
so undo the 3 hub to brake drum bolts and remove axle spindle - hmmm drum and wheel not separating..
there are 3 wheel studs , reomove these - remove axle (which still leaves the brake drum bolted up to left hand frame). take out spacer and remove wheel (after removing rear piece of mudguard)
%%htmlItem_7%%
- so pull every thing out :
work out the reason why :
somebody in the past has weleded the wheel to the brake drum - can see the 3 weld 'beads' here between the studs:
%%htmlItem_8%%
and get to work on the spokes - every one is stuck /rusted and need copius amounts of WD40 - and i have to make a spoke spanner out of old spanner to get a bit of leverage on ye old stuck spoke nipples, by cutting some 1/4" slots in it .
%%htmlItem_9%%
anyways 40 spokes later and are all free and now nice and tight and wheel is running true...
replace tyre
%%htmlItem_10%%
and on to the next bits :
primary chain and loose gearbox:
so i couldnt slide gearbox forward enough to get some slack in primary chain . asked on here and deduced the priamary chain was 2 ? links short ..
off to modak and bought a new chain with correct number of links and joining link :
old and new (longer)
%%htmlItem_1%%
whilst chain was off , removed the 3 chain case to engine bolts and drilled for lovckwire:
%%htmlItem_2%%
%%htmlItem_3%%
put back together - gearbox in right place with chain slack now, and cut some gaskets for the foot peg spacer:
%%htmlItem_4%%
tightened up all the gearbox mounting bolts
%%htmlItem_5%%
new cork gasket and all back together:
%%htmlItem_6%%
had to take 3 links out of rear chain as it was now too long.- not sure why orig owner had the short primary - but obviously needed to negthen the rear chain to compensate
the mirror is some generic brand chinese junk - with a crappy bracket - that kept coming loose - so thought about it and spied a kids old bicycle brake lever with two piece clamp :
cut it up . painted brown - and now a solid mounted bracket .
kids wont need two brakes on their bicycles anyway (jest)
%%htmlItem_1%%
%%htmlItem_2%%
didnt have a grease gun to fit the orig teclamit (?) grease nipples - and was missing one anyways
so bought some modern 1/4" bsf grease nipples and replaced and greased up the linkages :
%%htmlItem_3%%
%%htmlItem_4%%
tidied up the wiring at the battery and got it checked over again - success - so off to the registry office to get the number plate and permit sticker.
%%htmlItem_5%%
so two weeks ago plucked up the courage to take it out around the neighbourhood in melbourne.
- packed a tool kit
checked the oils .
so a bit af a jaunt - inc photo stop against melb background .
.%%htmlItem_6%%
%%htmlItem_7%%
took a few kick to get started when cold - definetly a technique needed and maybe some carb fettling - need to check the float needle sealing
had afew people look as i went past .
at one point i stopped near williamstown beach - had some bloke come up and start taliking to me - said his uncle had BSa's - and an indian .
... hot starting was a one or two kicks
so all in all back on the road - will need to fettling but pretty happy.
I found that O rings work a lot better than gaskets on the foot peg spacer.
email (option): wariron@tpg,com,au
Nice job
If you're not going to use the old grease nipple, I have one missing is you want to get rid of it
