Handle bar grips... M20

Can anyone post a picture of the correct rubber handle bar grips used on the M20 before the introduction of webbing grips?...

Were they 'Amal' items or 'John Bull'..?....Ian

Not really...But I've removed the webbing grips which are wrong for a 41 bike...and if I'm going to fit rubber grips I'd just as well have the right ones...

I'm confident no one will ever get a charge of Rivet Counter to stand up in court with the amount of stainless I have on my M20... ...Ian

Hi Ian

I use the big thick Amal grips, much more comfortable than the thin webbing grips which make your hands ache after a few hundred miles.

These came from "the rubber man" at Shepton about twelve years ago and I have worn most of the pattern off but they are still comfortable.

Perhaps not.

This page is from the 1940 civilian BSA spares list.

The spares list for the 1940 contract C6126 gives the part numbers as.

Throttle rubber grip 65-8503
Dummy grip Left hand 65 8502

So it looks like they should be like the second picture down on the left.

Contract C6126 shows these grips as well (1940)...

Contract C9310 shows 65-8503 and 65-8509...but I suspect the last number might be an error...

I looked in one WB30 contract and it also shows those grips....

Those look to be the grips which Jim / Jeff Hunter refer to as 'Late Amal'...'Late' to them means post-vintage !

There is a small 'AMAL' in block letters around the outer ring. Mine have worn a bit too, now and it's too dark to photograph them properly.

The Hunters make them to order based upon length and whether closed or open ends are required.
